PLAYA DEL REY, Calif., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- OK . . . you know you're guilty. You did run that red light, were speeding or did make that rolling right turn through a red light. 

So what's next? Well, as long as you and your violation ticket qualify, you can sign up for traffic school, a program that allows certain moving violators to receive instruction in driving and traffic safety. The entire process is not inexpensive, but it is a convenient way to not have points on your DMV record and to prevent your insurance rates from going up.

Most California Superior Courts have websites that allow you to pay your ticket fine and request traffic school, including an extension to complete traffic school.

To be able to enroll in traffic school – the violation must be eligible and you have not attended traffic school on another citation issued within the last 18 months. 

Attending Traffic School

Before the court allows enrollment, both the citation bail amount and a non-refundable administrative fee must first be paid. Then there will be an additional charge by the traffic school. There are a variety of traffic schools – attend classes, on-line, even a workbook form. 

If you fail to file the traffic school certificate of completion by the due date, the fee you paid will be deemed as bail and forfeited and the DMV will be notified of the conviction. Meaning . . . points on your driving record and higher insurance rates. Along with violation ticket dismissal, traffic schools offer a variety of other programs, including defensive driving, point of insurance reduction and driver's education needs. Cost of Traffic School

A red-light camera traffic citation, plus administrative fees, plus the price of traffic school, can run as high as $500. But remember, once all is paid, your DMV record will be clear and your insurance will not go up. With a second ticket within 18 months, courts can make an exception, but your automobile insurance rates could rise.
